Sixteen centuries of the same man.

  1. V–VI c. AD History Rhineland A Ripuarian Frankish warrior out of Xanten — a real man on a real river, before any of it got told twice.
  2. XII–XIII c. AD Myth Bavaria · North Sea · Iceland The Nibelungenlied in Middle High German, the Þiðrekssaga written down from Low German lips in Bergen, the Völsunga saga in Old Norse prose. Three literatures, one dragon.
  3. 1876 Opera Bayreuth Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen premieres complete in the Festspielhaus he built for it. Siegfried is the third night and the axis of all four.
  4. 1924 Silent Film Germany Fritz Lang’s Die Nibelungen — two parts, no sound, UFA at full scale. The dragon-fight is a hand-built puppet the size of a truck.
  5. 2017 Anime Japan Fate/Apocrypha. A homunculus receives Siegfried’s heart and with it his blood, his blade, his weight. The dragon-slayer’s line keeps finding new bodies.

ELetting a man see, think, and feel. Giving him oaths that bind, and the standing to swear them.
